Globus Connect Server is the software installed by institutions to connect storage and data to the Globus ecosystem, so users can leverage the rich data management platform Globus offers. To expand the capabilities offered by Globus, work is underway on the next generation Globus Connect Server to provide enhanced endpoint management, more versatile data access interfaces, and improved deployment models. These new capabilities will be built out as a series of releases of version 5 of the software, with incremental functionality made available with each release.

As we announced last week at GlobusWorld, the hosted CLI (legacy CLI) is currently deprecated and support for it will be discontinued on August 1, 2018. The hosted CLI has been replaced by the native CLI application (https://docs.globus.org/cli/) which has been available in production since April 2017.

In the sixth and final article in this series, we turn our attention from on-premise to cloud-based storage. I’ll be addressing four primary types of cloud storage: file storage, object storage, cold storage and file systems, first defining each and then providing my views on how each might be used for research.

This week in a trip to Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, the U.S. Secretary of Energy used Globus to move 500GB of data between ALCF and NERSC.

In the HPC world, under-the-covers tools for things like file transfer aren't usually the story. It's what happens before and after data is moved that tends to get the headlines. The data movement itself? Not so much.

This week we are happy to celebrate the second birthday of Globus Auth, our authentication and authorization platform.

Globus Auth now supports nearly 91,000 users from our 478 identity providers. With over 37,000 new users since last year, the number of users has grown at twice the rate it did last year. If you also include linked identities, the number rises to over 116,000 identities.

The venerable storage format, tape, is the topic of the fifth article in our Storage Innovation blog series. If you’re shocked by the mention of tape in a series about storage innovation, you may be pleasantly surprised by how far tape has evolved. In this post, I’ll cover the essentials that research organizations need to know about tape storage, and highlight some recent advances that make tape more attractive than ever.

New Year's Reflections from Globus Co-Founder Ian Foster

Happy New Year!

As 2017 fades into memory, I thought it might be interesting to reflect a bit on where we’ve been and where we plan to be this year. Here are some things I’ve observed recently and a few that I plan to keep an eye on.
