Globus at the ALCF
January 14, 2026 | Susan Tussy
The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) at the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Lab provides world-class computing resources and expertise, and is one of the facilities involved in the Genesis Mission. Researchers are using Globus and ALCF computing resources to drive discoveries. The Globus service is used extensively in projects at the ALCF to manage the massive amounts of data and compute resources including:
- The ALCF Inference Service, which uses Globus Auth for secure, federated identity management and Globus Compute to remotely trigger distributed inference tasks, and provides the programmatic interfaces to 30+ open-source AI models for science
- Integrated Research Initiative (IRI) to integrate supercomputers, workflow tools and expertise for cross-facility science where Globus services - Transfer, Compute and Flows- provide the automated backbone for securely moving data, running computations, and linking processes across facilities.
- Running remote analyses at several facilities including the Advanced Photon Source (APS), National Fusion Facility (DIII-D), and the advanced Light Source (ALS) through the use of Globus Transfer and Compute.
- OpenCosmo Portal to simplify access to simplify access to massive cosmological simulation datasets which allows users to run queries, visualize results and launch HPC-scales analysis of data.
